Parysatis was the 5th-century BC illegitimate daughter of Artaxerxes I, Emperor of Persia and Andia of Babylon.

***

EXCERPT: The court of Persia, during the reign of Artaxerxwes, was the scene of many crimes and atrocities, for the worst of which the queen-mother, Parysatis, was responsible. She had great power and influence over Antaxerxes. The long catalogue of her cruel and bloody deeds without a parallel even in the history of Oriental despotisms. Amer victims was the virtuous Queen Starira, whom she poisoned. The members of the royal household became the special objects of jealousy to each other, and executions, assassinations and suicides decimated the royal family. The king put to death his eldest son, Darius, whom he had appointed his successor, but who offended him by asking for Aspasia, one of the king’s concubines, and some say Darius conspired to kill the king.

Child Care Providers Who Murder Children

What does this subject – Child Care Providers Who Murder Children – have to do with misandry? A great deal actually.

First, present-day social engineers, whether they come from a corporate, government or leftist utopian perspective promote the politically correct agenda of “universal day care.” With so many fatherless children, an excellent thing for the controlling classes, the next step is parentless children – an ideal state of affairs for those who like Secretary of Treasury Robert Rubin who in 1998 gave this in answer in response to a question regarding the government’s plan to provide corporations with “a flexible and mobile workforce to which everyone contributes to the limits of their ability”: “federally subsidized day care.” In other words, a population of smaller, more easily reassigned,  family units which will the controlling interests the opportunity to engineer children to become the most obedient and profitable resources.

Second, the propagation of misandry depends upon constant propaganda emphasizing a wide  array of claimed shortcomings of men. One of the effective devices used to keep the message going is the repeated display and emphasis on representations of male criminals, images of sociopaths who can be, through incessant repetition reinforced by false generalizations, put forth a typical of what all men inherently “really are,” deep inside. For this tactic to work, however, news reports and other public representations of women who commit heinous crimes must generally be made to fit into two categories which do not dehumanize them. They must be seen as victims of circumstances (marriage, motherhood, poverty), insane and thus not responsible for their actions and therefore “victims” of a disease, or failing to fit one of these categories individual bad eggs who are, as the narrative would have it, “not like typical women.”

Another aspect of the propagation of the stereotype of evil maleness is the creation of a false historical narrative which employs the devices mentioned above. Thus, for the narrative to hold, it is necessary to keep information on female criminals to a manageable portion.

To counter this tactic of misandry it is valuable to put forth a more truthful and complete picture of female criminality. Female serial killers, a subject which has been researched by The Unknown History of Misandry, is one area in need of attention. The most complete study of the subject to have been published so far lists 140 of these criminals. UHoM has turned up an additional 220 (plus a number in another category: Black Widows who murdered two husbands). Among them are a large number of child care providers, most of them fitting the category which used to be termed “baby farmer,” referring to any person who took in children, usually infants, for payment.

Several baby farmers have found their way into the standard lists of female serial killers. All of them coming from Great Britain or the British Commonwealth. The reason for this restriction are due merely to accessibility of information. Little interest in, or funding for, the study of the subjects has ever existed, in stark contrast to the strong interest demonstrated in male serial killers.

The few baby farmers whose names are currently widely known were all sentenced to death and thus, since there has been for decades a great deal of interest in the subject of capital punishment plus an equal amount of interest in the treatment of female criminals in history, historians have scoured the capital punishment records – which are fairly easy of access, complete and of a manageable scale -- thoroughly. In the United States, however, despite many homicide investigations, indictments and trials of baby farmers, none were ever convicted of child murder (though some baby farmers in their capacity as abortionists were convicted for the deaths of mothers they had housed and operated upon). Deaths of children at the hands of baby farmers occurred in enormous numbers, however. UHoM has uncovered at least 60 cases of baby farmers reasonably suspected of having murdering children in newspaper reports dating from the 1860s through the 1940s.

The most chillingly effective advocate of government child control may be Dr. Sandra Scarr, a high level proponent of behavior modification (former president of four organizations – Society for Research in Child Development, Association for Psychological Science, Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology, Behavior Genetics Association; former  Board of Directors member of American Psychological Association, founding member of the American Psychological Society), and major investor in the largest day care corporation in the world, Kinder Care (chief executive officer 1994-1997). Her influential utopian strategy is to manipulate the health profession to label infant’s maternal attachment and even their shyness as “dysfunctional” (mental illness which must be “treated” regardless of parents’ wishes). “Treatments would be developed to deal with this: drugs and Pavlovian conditioning (behavior modification based on fear). Any parent who would refuse to allow their baby to be treated would be deemed by Family Court to be unfit: they would have their child confiscated and sold into the foster care industry. She calls this Brave New World strategy, which is currently in its early stages, “New Century Children.”

William Norman Grigg warned  the public in 2002 of this anti-family scam: “Like most people who lust to restructure society, Scarr doesn't shy away from the prospect of forcing people to conform to her ideological blueprint. And like Brezhnev-era Soviet commissars, Scarr eagerly denounces opposition to the Brave New World she envisions as a form of illness. Since "being isolated at home with one adult and no peers" is socially harmful, it "should not be permitted," she contends. As the drive to create the rootless, socialized New Century Children continues, ‘Multiple attachments to others will become the ideal. Shyness and exclusive maternal attachment will be seen as dysfunctional. New treatments will be developed for children with exclusive maternal attachments (EMA syndrome) and those with low sociability scores.’” [William Norman Grigg, “New Century Children,” The New American, Sep. 8, 2002]

Priscila Souza Ferreira: Serial (?) Child Sacrifice in Brazil - 2000

$

FULL TEXT: Brasilia, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Brazilian police said on Friday they arrested two self-proclaimed voodoo priests for the murder of a 6-year-old boy who bled to death in a black-magic ceremony. In statements to police, Joaquim Alves, 71, and his girlfriend Priscila Souza Ferreira, 22, blamed each other for the murder of Carlos Andres de Jesus Barros, who disappeared last Thursday in the impoverished Brazilian state of Bahia.

Police said the pair was suspected in other child killings. The boy was found dead at the bottom of a well with his clothes removed, his hands and feet bound and two puncture wounds in his stomach, authorities said. The couple led police to the body after their shantytown neighbours tipped off authorities. “One neighbour called, saying the boy kept crying and screaming, that he was suffering,” said lead investigator Juliana de Oliveira Soares. “Inside the house, we found a series of religious icons, all of them of spirits that do harm. Then we found the body.”

Enraged after learning of the murder, townspeople on Friday destroyed Alves’ makeshift home in the tropical city of Vitoria da Conquista.

Bahia is the centre of the country’s rich Afro Brazilian religious culture, where followers often are “possessed” by spirits during religious ceremonies. Animal sacrifice is practiced on special occasions, but human sacrifice is not allowed.

Soares said the two voodoo priests killed the boy after Alves’ 10-year-old son led him to the house. Alves told police that his girlfriend has tried to kill other children as well. “We are investigating the possibility they have killed other children. This, unfortunately, is a possibility, but I am not able to say more at this time,” Soares said.

Some leaders of the Afro Brazilian religious culture tried to distance themselves from the slaying. “These people, these are witch-doctors. They have nothing to do with any houses of worship here,” said Antonio Bispo, an official at the Bahian Federation of Afro Cults.

Last year, Brazilian police arrested a witch doctor on charges of murder and grave robbing after finding 16 skulls and other bones buried beneath his home. The remains of a small child also were found, as was a photo of an infant with the words “Para Morrer,” or “To Die,” written on the backside.

Sofia Komaroff, Serial Killer Spouse: Wife of the “Wolf of Moscow” - 1923

FULL TEXT: Moscow – Vasili Kofaroff [sic], convicted of the murder of 33 persons, and his wife, as his accomplice, were sentenced to be shot within 72 hours. Neither betrayed any emotion as the sentence was passed but there was loud applause from the crowd in the court room and cries that the sentence should be carried into effect immediately instead of waiting 72 hours.

[“Shoot Couple – Russian Man And Wife Who Murdered 33 To Be Executed,” The Capital Times (Madison, Wi.), Jun. 7, 1923, p. 1]

***

EXCERPT: In the early 1920s, thirty-three men fell victim to a sociopathic horse trader named Vasili Komaroff, aka the “Wolf of Moscow.” After luring a prospective customer to his stable, Komaroff – assisted by his wife – would bludgeon or strangle the victim to death, strip him of possessions then truss up the body, stuff it into a sack, and deposit it in an empty lot somewhere in the city. When authorities finally caught up with him, Komaroff claimed that he killed soley for the money – an unlikely explanation, since his three dozen murders netted him a grand total of $26.40. Clearly, there were other, darker motives at work – but the Soviet authorities were much less interested in fathoming his psychology than in putting him to death as promptly as possible. Kamaroff and his wife were executed by a firing squad in June 1923.

Beate Zschäpe, The “Nazi Bride” Serial Killer – Germany, 2011

$

There is a great deal of information available online about this case. Only a few salient aspects are recounted here. Beate Zschäpe is sometimes referred to as “The Nazi Bride.”

On November 8, 2011, Beate Zschäpe,  turned herself in to police in Jena. On November 11, 2011, the Office of the Attorney General of Germany started investigations because of Zschäpe’s supposed membership of a terrorist unit. The trial continues (as of July 2014).

According to the charge, the NSU was a group of three members who committed their crimes after having coordinated their division of labour. The other two are now dead.

Zschäpe is said to have had the indispensable task of giving the terrorist unit the appearance of normality and legality among other things by maintaining an inconspicuous façade at their respective places of residence and by securing their joint flat as a safe haven and headquarters for their actions. In addition, she is said to have been “significantly responsible for the logistics of the group”. Thus she had managed the stolen money from the robberies and had rented caravans several times, including a vehicle used in one of the crimes, according to the Office of the Attorney General reports in the bill of indictment. [Wikipedia]

~ 10 Murders ~

“As a founding member of the NSU …”, she was accused of having taken part in the murders of eight fellow citizens of Turkish origin and one fellow citizen of Greek origin, in the murderous attack on two police officers in Heilbronn, as well as in the attempted murders by bomb attacks of the NSU in the historic district of Cologne and in Cologne-Müllheim. [Wikipedia]

~ Bombing

In a dactyloscopic report, evidence of Zschäpe’s DNA is stated to have been found on newspaper articles about the bomb attack in Cologne and the murder of Habil Kilic. [Wikipedia]

~ Arson, attempted murder of 3

In addition, Zschäpe is accused of having “set the flat in Zwickau on fire, hereby having rendered herself liable for prosecution for the attempted murder of a neighbour and two craftsmen as well as for particularly serious arson.” [Wikipedia]

~  Child pornography

The department of public prosecution in Zwickau also investigated her because child pornographic data had been found on her computer. However, this investigation was said to have been closed, since the penalty for this would be of “no significant weight” in comparison to the penalty for the alleged actions of which she had already been accused. [Wikipedia]

On defendant Beate Zschäpe’s first day in the courtroom, May 6, 2013,her behavior upsets the victims’ relatives, who are present as joint plaintiffs. Zschäpe laughs, makes jokes and brims with self-confidence in her business suit, even though she keeps her back turned to photographers as she enters the room. According to Czech journalist Marie Šrámková, serial killer Jaroslava Fabiánová experienced a miserable childhood and was repeatedly raped as a minor. She discovered homosexuality as a way seeking sexual satisfaction without needing to bother with men, whom she had grown to find incompatible. As an adult she lived with a lesbian girlfriend, the money earned money by prostitution and by robbing prospective customers. In the role of prostitute, she would commonly drug the men she picked up before sexual intercourse would  occur and rob them. [Marie Šrámková, Oct. 30, 2008, Zena]

Between 1981 and 2003 she murdered four men, two of them elderly, aged aged 84 and 78. She was convicted and served time for murder twice, but was allowed parole, allowing to continue her criminal career. From the beginning, Fabiánová’s killings are particularly savage. At the age of 17 her victim was subjected to a battering with a masonry hammer consisting of three blows on the head, followed by twenty knife stabs in the face. Her final murders, in 2003, involved attacking an 84-year-old man with a meat cleaver and the stabbing of another man 38 times.

There are quite a few articles on this case in Czech available online, but to date there is no Wikipedia entry.

Emily Bell, Suspected Black Widow Serial Killer – Louisiana, 1984

FULL TEXT: Alexandria, La. – A 67-year-old woman accused of poisoning three men for their insurance money has been released on bail after three years in jail awaiting trial.

Emily Bell, facing two counts of second-degree murder and one of attempted second-degree murder, hugged her jailers and appeared to be crying as she was released on $200,000 bond.

Bell is accused of using arsenic to fatally poison Tanzy C. Reeves, who died in 1979 at age 61, and Mountville Townley, 43, whose death in Ms. Bell’s Pineville apartment in 1984 prompted her arrest.

She also is accused of trying to poison Earl Campbell, who, prosecutors say, killed himself in 1982 before the arsenic reached fatal levels.

The state contends the murders were part of a scheme by Ms. Bell to collect insurance money and the estates of the victims.

Defense attorney George Higgins said appeals and the complexity of the case had delayed Bell’s trial.

‘‘It hasn’t been dilatory tactics by either side,’’ Higgins said.

Ms. Bell took out two marriage licenses with Reeves and claimed to have been married to Campbell. Townley was living with her at the time of his death.

She soaked the child in a pot of concentrated lye. The only cause for the crime is that the prisoner killed the child to escape daily nursing it. This is the second crime of the same kind she has committed within the past two years. She appeared to be totally unconscious of what was going on during the trial, and twice went to sleep in the dock with her head resting in her hands. She has an innocent face, and is not apparently in the slightest degree affected by the result of her trial. She has not been sentenced.

This astonishing case involves a 6-year-old obsessed with a desire to murder babies. She was successful, after planning the deed long in advance, to murder her 18-month-old sister and expressed the desire to kill more babies in the future.

***

FULL TEXT: Danville, Ky., June 4. – The 18-months-old baby killed by its demon 6-year-old sister, both daughters of Mose Bottoms, colored, at Atoka, five miles west of here, was buried in the colored cemetery near Atoka Friday morning in the presence of a large con course of colored people, a few of the whites who live in the neighborhood being present.

To say that the whole community is horror-stricken ever the terrible deed conveys but a mild idea of the situation. The youthful murderess expresses no regret for her act, but says she always intended te kill the baby, and would have done so long ago had she not been watched so closely that she could not.

She is fairly intelligent, and never manifested any special viciousness until a desire to harm her baby sister was first noticed when she mashed the poor little innocent’s finger and toe-nails off with a hatchet ten days age. She experienced more pleasure in thinking and talking about what she had done than pain over the severe whipping she received for her unnatural act.

When the fifteen-year-old colored girl, who had been watching the children all day to keep the eldest from harming the baby, returned to the room she found the murderess in great glee, and still swinging the deadly club in her hand, while at her feet lay the lifeless form of her victim.

Her father, an honest, hard working colored man, is almost heart broken ever the horrible affair. He lost his wife seen after the birth of the murdered infant, and since then, having to go out to work, the children have been badly cared for. When asked this morning if she would like to kill any one else, she answered that she would like to kill some mere babies.

It is not known what will be done with her, as she is too young for a criminal prosecution to be thought of it is probable she will be sent to a school of reform, as it is generally feared that if permitted to go at large she will develop a murderous propensity equaled to no child of modern times, save, perhaps Jesse Pomeroy, whose terrible murders of twenty years age are still remembered with horror.

1873 – Sarah Earhardt– Germantown, Ohio

Minor crimes, such its the poisoning of juvenile animals and the burning of numerous houses, are also said to be among the number of her achievements.

1874 – Henrietta Weibel– The Bronx, New York

Henrietta Weibel, aged 15, was arrested, on a charge of attempted murder and incendiarism, she having on Wednesday night, attempted to burn the infant child of Mrs. Franck, a boarder at the Leopold Palace Hotel, and afterwards made two endeavours to set fire to the house. The baby was lying asleep when the girl set fire to the bed clothes. Another servant extinguished the flames, but the little child was nearly suffocated.

1886 – Harriet Nason– Rutland, Vermont –  “predicted” two fires

Neighbors of Mrs. Nason ascribe to her remarkable powers in the way of prophesying fires. Her house on Grove street, it is said, was burned in accordance with her prediction about three years age. Subsequently she had another fiery vision. This alarmed another family in the same block and a watchman was employed. But the second fire occurred on scheduled time, though not until Mrs. Nason had been notified by the owners of the property to vacate. The popular impression is that Mrs. Nason is afflicted with a most dangerous and insidious form of insanity and that all the results of her secret work are not yet known.

1886 – Mrs. Stevens– Wangaratta, Australia

The evidence disclosed a strong circumstantial case that Mrs. Stevens first poisoned the deceased, and then after robbing him set fire to his house.

1890 – Marianna Skublińska– Warsaw, Poland

During the night of the 17th she set fire to her lodging, after having first murdered the children committed to her charge.

Then this inhuman woman went and stood in the yard of the house among the excited crowd and quietly waited to see what would happen. As the house was only built of wood, she evidently hoped it would be completely destroyed. But one of the inmates of the house suddenly remembered the woman in the garret and her charges, and called out to the firemen to save the children.

Then Skubliuski was for the first time soon standing in the yard, and when she was asked if the children were already saved, she answered that they were no longer with her. In the meanwhile, the firemen had so far succeeded in subduing the fire that one of them penetrated into Skublinski’s lodging, and, not knowing what she had said, immediately began to search for the children. He soon found one little corpse, and then two more.

1893 – Mattie C. Shann– Trenton, New Jersey

It is alleged that Mrs. Shann poisoned her victims with a solution of bichloride of mercury, that she at the life of her daughter in the same manner, and that she burned three houses in Princeton. The motive for her arts was the recovery of insurance money.

1901 – Jane Toppan– Boston, Massachusetts

It was an irresistible propensity which impelled her to kill her best friends, and to commit the four crimes of arson to which she also confessed.

Elizabeth Routt, Suspected Champion Black Widow – Tennessee, 1857

FULL TEXT: It was once said that six grinning skeletons encircled the marriage couch within the walls of the Hazel Green plantation home of Mrs. Elizabeth E. Routt.

After almost 130 years, the guilt or innocence of Mrs. Routt in connection with the sudden and mysterious deaths of her, six husbands remains in question.

All that remains of the mystery today is found in the weathered pages of court records, the ruins of the plantation home and in a small, crowded graveyard under an immense holly tree a mile east of Hazel Green.

The story began shortly after the war of 1812 when Elizabeth Evans Dale was born to Adam Dale and Elizabeth Evans who had come to Smith County, Tenn., in 1797.

Historical records note that Miss Dale developed into a “beautiful and charming woman with auburn hair, dark brown eyes and fair complexion.”

History also records that “her appeal to men was unusual.”

Upon reaching womanhood, Miss Dale married ... First to a man named Gibbons, then to a Mr. Flannigan. All that remains of those marriages are the notations, “both died rather. mysteriously a short while after, leaving no children.”

Not long after the death of his first wife, Alexander Jeffries, a plantation owner from  Madison County, visited Tennessee and met the former Elizabeth Dale.

Following a courtship and subsequent marriage, the couple returned to the Hazel Green plantation, They lived there until 1837 when Jeffries died at the age of 65.

“Whether there was any suspicion concerning the cause of his death is not known, for his will, filed the next year, states that he was in bad health, though of sound mind, records show.

Taking over operation of the plantation, new widow ruled slaves “with an iron hand” and wasted little time in securing another master for the estate.

He was Robert H. High, of Limestone County, who served as representative in the state, legislature from 1833 to 1839. High married the then Mrs. Jeffries in 1839, and history records only his sudden death in 1842.

Absalom Brown became the next pretender to the throne of Elizabeth. The New Market merchant was married to the again-widowed Elizabeth on March 16 1846.

Following her marriage to Brown, Elizabeth proceeded with long-thought-out plans for A fine home to which she might invite her guests, some of whom were members of Madison County’s most prominent families.

The invisioned home, on the same site of the former two-story log cabin dwelling, took a slave and carpenter more than a year to build. “Furnishings were the richest obtainable,” a history of the time records.

The home became a center for festive parties, “Where every convenience was furnished. Even servants’ bells in each room.”

But the, splendor and gaiety of  the Brown plantation came to a sudden end on a night in 1847, only a year after the marriage, when Brown died of a strange malady.

Brown’s death was slow and painful and the strange, malady “caused his body to swell so that it was necessary that he be buried during the night following his death.” Records reveal the fact that, “‘Present residents of the county recall that their parents and  grandparent’s often remarked on their part in the ceremony there in the dark, aided only by lantern light, held by shaking darkies.”

But Elizabeth’s marital spirit remained undaunted.

On May 11 of the following year she was married to her sixth husband, Willis Routt. Her spouse soon followed the path of his predecessors and died soon after the wedding.

After the death of her sixth husband, suspicion of foul play centered on Mrs. Elizabeth Gobbons Flannigan Jeffries High Brown Routt.

Records indicate that only the name Elizabeth High Brown Routt was recognized by her family because of the code of etiquette of the time that three trips to the altar were enough for any respectable woman.

[Despite Elizabeth Routt’s] unusual appeal to men, there was one man who did not succumb to her charms. The nearest neighbor to the Routt plantation was Abner Tate. During the years immediately following the death of Elizabeth’s last husband, several squabbles erupted between Tate and the widow, stemming from loose livestock and other plantation matters.

The neighbors jointly confessed no liking whatever for each other.

The squabbles continued to progress in their degree of bitterness and ultimately led Tate to openly charge Elizabeth with the murder of each of her six husbands.

To support his contention’ of the foul deed, Tate told a strange tale. Tate’s charge, “substantiated by sight,” was that in the main hallway of the Routt home Elizabeth kept a hat rack on which hung a hat from each of her dead husbands.

Tate’s charges were never verified and the case was dropped. But Tate’s involvement with Elizabeth was far from finished.

In 1854, Tate was severely wounded by a shotgun blast to the stomach. The slave who fired the shot was killed before he could comment on his actions, but a wave of  rumors alleged that “the tigress of Hazel Green” had taken her revenge.

Tate recovered from his wounds but his problems were not over.

Not long after Tate’s recovery, reports began to circulate that a drover from Kentucky, on his way back from selling his herd in South Alabama, had been murdered at Tate’s home and cremated in a large fireplace there.

The source of those reports was said to be Mrs. Routt who enlisted the aid of a suitor to prefer a charge of murder against Tate. The suitor was D. H. Bingham, a Meridianville school teacher.

Tate was acquitted in court of the murder charge and subsequently tried to clear his name further by publishing a pamphlet with the elaborate title “Defense of Abner Tate Against Charges of Murder Preferred by D. H. Bingham.”

In the publication, Tate charged that Elizabeth’s “bridal chamber was a charnel house” and spoke of her as the woman “around whose marriage couch six grinning skeletons were already hung.”

Another reference to Mrs. Routt is found in court records of 1857. Mrs. Routt filed a suit claiming $50,000 in damages from Tate’s publication.

The court records one such excerpt from Tate’s pamphlet which Mrs. Routt found offensive.

“Poor  soul -- she is alone -- she ought to have a husband. And then such a husband - an industrious sober husband like D. H. Bingham! She has not been particularly fortunate in. that  respect heretofore and in Bingham’s opinion was entitled to all the consolation an industrious sober man can bring to the bed around which nightly assembles a conclave of ghosts to witness the endearments that once were theirs and shudder through their fleshless forms at the fiendish spirit which wraps the grave worm in the bridal garment and enforces a lingering death with a conjugal kiss.”

The question of whther Ms. Routt was Madison County’s answer to Bluebeard or merely the victim of misfortune and a vengeful neighbor probably will never be known.

In the late 1850s Mrs. Routt moved to Marshall County, Miss., to live with her son, W. A. Jeffries.

All trace was lost after the move and only a few mementos remain to keep alive the memory of Mrs. High Brown Routt.

There are the remains of the plantation and, in the words of a historian, “A few yards to the south of the house, beneath an immense holly tree, surrounded by a low thicket, tombstones lie in a random pile-that of husbands, child and ancestor, a harbor for reptiles and field mice.”

Queen Olympias of Macedonia & Her “Studied Cruelty” – 316 BC

EXCERPT (Article 1 of 3): Olympias,  (born c. 375 bc– died 316), wife of Philip II of Macedonia and mother of Alexander the Great. She had a passionate and imperious nature, and she played important roles in the power struggles that followed the deaths of both rulers. The daughter of Neoptolemus, king of Epirus, Olympias apparently was originally named Myrtale. Later she may have been called Olympias as a recognition of Philip’s victory in the Olympic Games of 356 bc. [Envyclopedia Britannica]

***

EXCERPT (Aricle 2 of 3): Olympias.Death of Arrhideeus and Eurydice.Victory of Cassander. The conduct of Polysperchon had been but weak, and the queen Eurydice appears to have succeeded in that which was her constant endeavour, to supplant him in the management of her feeble husband, and the government of Macedonia. To recover his lost power, he brought Olympias into play. He advanced with her into Macedonia, and Eurydice and Arrhidaeus led their forces to oppose him; but the Macedonians refused to fight against the mother of Alexander, and Eurydice and her husband fell into the power of Olympias. She mercilessly abused her success; the royal captives were put to death, with circumstances of studied cruelty; and the chief friends of Cassander were sought out for slaughter, including his brother, with a hundred of the most eminent Macedonians. But the hour of vengeance was not far off. Cassander had been united with Eurydice, by the closest friendship certainly, and, if prevailing report be trusted, by unlawful love. He was now hastening to avenge her death, and that of his brother and friends. By vast activity he made his way into Macedonia, though great endeavours had been made by the friends of Polysperchon to occupy the passes. The barbarity of Olympias had disgusted the Macedonians, and she now obtained from them but little support. She was besieged through the winter in Pydna, and in the spring the town was obliged to submit, and Olympias surrendered, only stipulating for her life.

Death of Olympiasi The sequel is an abominable tissue of treachery and murder. Amphipolis still held out for Olympias, and it was only by her bidding that Aristonous, the commander, was induced to surrender the place. The high character of Aristonous excited apprehension in Cassander, who had adopted the base policy of destroying all whose ability was such that their opposition might be dangerous. He procured the death of Aristonous; and then proceeded by dark and crooked ways to fulfil his revenge against Olympias. Some of the kindred of those whom she had murdered were prevailed on to accuse her in the Macedonian assembly; she was absent, and had none to speak for her; and the assembly condemned her to death. Cassander sent some of his own friends to advise her to secret flight; he offered to provide a ship which should convey her to Athens; and this he did that, by her flight, she might appear to acknowledge the justice of her sentence, and might then be put to death in the course of the voyage. She refused to escape, and demanded to be heard in her defence before the assembled Macedonians; but Cassander, dreading the effect of her presence, withheld his consent. He then selected two hundred soldiers to despatch her; they entered the house, but on seeing her their resolution failed, and they retired. At length the execution was performed by the kindred of her victims. She died with the greatest firmness. (B. C.315.)

EXCERPTS (Article 3 of 3): Philip and Olympias were to have two children, Alexander and a daughter, Cleopatra, but after Philip saw his wife sleeping with snakes; his days of visiting the bedchamber were over. Olympias had long been a devotee to the cult of Dionysos, something that angered many of the Macedonian people and she may even have introduced the practice of handling snakes to the cult.

In 336 BCE at the wedding banquet of Olympias’ brother Alexander to her daughter Cleopatra, Philip was assassinated by the disgruntled Pausanias of Oretis, who had been rebuked by Philip after he had asked for retribution against Attalus. Suspicion immediately fell upon Olympias who some believed had encouraged Pausanias to seek revenge and kill Philip. Plutarch wrote, “When Pausanias, who had been assaulted at the instigation of Attalus and Cleopatra, murdered Philip for failing to recompense him, most of the blame attached itself to Olympias, on the grounds that she had encouraged the young man in his anger and incited him to do the deed …” There is even some evidence that she had horses waiting for the assassin to use for his escape. ] http://www.ancient.eu.com/Olympias/ ]

The Hadfield’s Italian Maid: Lunatic Serial Child Murderer – Florence, c 1763

From a letter by Mary Hadfield Cosway, dated May 24, 1830 (punctuation and spelling modernised):

I may relate a circumstance at my birth as extraordinary as unheard of.— Four or five children were born before me. Put to nurse out of town, my mother used to go frequently found the child well and to her great surprise the next day the nurse came and the child had died in the night. Changed nurse, changed place, the same happened through four children. At my birth my father resolved to take a nurse in the house and had a governess to keep always a watch on the nurse and the child.

One day a maid servant went in the nursery, took me in her arms, and said: “Pretty little creature, I have sent four to heaven I hope to send you also.”

The governess, struck at this extraordinary speech, ran to my father, proper enquiries were made. The woman said she thought it doing a good act and was confined for life from that instant.

My father said I should be brought up a Catholic and all his children, were also. When four years old I was put into a Convent, under the protection of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Tuscany. [From this passage can conclude that the nurse’s crimes were discovered, circa 1763, before Mary was four years old.]

[George Williamson, Richard Cosway, R. A., 1905, George Bell and Sons, p. 12]

***

Maria Cosway was born Maria Luisa Caterina Cecilia Hadfield (pronounced Mariah) in 1760 in Florence, Italy to Charles Hadfield, said to have been a native of Shrewsbury, England, and an Italian mother. Her father was a successful innkeeper at Livorno and had become very wealthy. The Hadfields operated three inns in Tuscany, frequented by British aristocrats taking the Grand Tour. One of eight children, Maria demonstrated artistic talent at a young age during her Roman Catholic convent education. She remained a devout Catholic all her life.

Four of the Hadfield children were killed by a mentally ill nursemaid, who was caught after being overheard talking about killing Maria. The nurse claimed that her young victims would be sent to Heaven after she killed them. She was sentenced to life in prison. Only Maria, her brothers Richard and George, and a younger sister Charlotte survived.

Wikipedia: Marybeth Tinning (née Roe, born September 11, 1942) is an American prisoner currently serving a sentence of 20 years to life after being convicted of the murder of one of her children, while her other eight died under suspicious circumstances.

Marybeth Roe was born in Duanesburg, a small town in Schenectady County, New York. Her father, Alton Roe, worked as a press operator for General Electric. She and her younger brother attended Duanesburg High School, where she was a typical student.

Over the next few years, she worked in a series of low wage jobs. Eventually, she became a nurse’s aide at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. In 1963, she met Joe Tinning on a blind date. The couple married in spring 1965.

~ Confession and conviction ~

Suspicion mounted against Tinning, who was always alone when the children died, but there wasn’t any evidence of wrongdoing. However, after a police interrogation, Tinning confessed to smothering Tami Lynne, Nathan, and Timothy (which she later retracted).  She denied having harmed the other children. She was convicted in Tami Lynne’s case and sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.

Her first attempt for parole was in March 2007. At the parole board meeting Tinning said, “I have to be honest, and the only thing that I can tell you is that I know that my daughter is dead. I live with it every day,” she continued, “I have no recollection and I can’t believe that I harmed her. I can’t say any more than that.” Her parole was denied.

In late January 2009, Tinning went before the parole board for the second time. Tinning stated “I was going through bad times,” when she killed her daughter. The parole board again denied her parole, stating that her remorse was “superficial at best.” Tinning was eligible for parole again in January 2011. In 2011 and 2013 Tinning was again denied parole. At the 2011 appearance, Tinning said that she killed Tami Lynne because she thought the child would die like her other children anyway. When questioned about the murder during her 2013 appearance, she said, “It’s just — I can’t remember. I mean, I know I did it, but I can’t tell you why. There is no reason.”Her next opportunity for parole will be in January 2015.

9 Children’s deaths

1) Jennifer ~ Jan. 3, 1972

In the first five years of their marriage, Joe and Marybeth Tinning had two children, Barbara and Joseph, Jr. In October 1971, Tinning’s father died of a sudden heart attack. In December that same year, she gave birth to a third child, Jennifer. On January 3, 1972, Jennifer died in a Schenectady hospital of severe infection, which was diagnosed as meningitis. At that time, most investigators did not believe that this death was suspicious because Jennifer was sick at birth and never brought home. The successive deaths of her father and her baby may have affected Tinning’s fragile mental condition. Never a happy, well-adjusted adult and frequently described as “strange” by many of her friends and family members, Tinning seemed to become even more distant after Jennifer’s death.

2) Joseph, Jr. ~  Jan. 20, 1972

Seventeen days after Jennifer’s death, on January 20, 1972, Tinning took her two-year old son, Joseph Jr., to the Ellis Hospital emergency room in Schenectady. She reported that he had some type of seizure. The child was kept under observation for a time. When doctors could not find anything wrong with him, Joseph Jr. was sent home. Several hours later, Tinning returned to the ER with Joseph, Jr. This time, he was dead. She told doctors that she had placed him in bed and returned later to find him tangled in the sheets and his body was blue.

3) Barbara ~ Circa Mar. 1, 1972

Nearly six weeks after Joseph, Jr.’s death, Tinning was back at the same emergency room with her four-year old daughter, Barbara. Tinning told the staff that Barbara had gone into convulsions. Though the doctors wanted the child to remain overnight, Tinning insisted on taking her home. Several hours later, like the incident with Joseph Jr., she returned with Barbara who was unconscious. The child later died in a hospital bed from unknown causes. When police asked Tinning about this incident years later, she barely remembered it. “Had a daughter,” she told investigators, “while we were sleeping, she called out to me and I went in and she was having a convulsion. I guess I don’t even remember whether ... I think maybe we just ... I don’t remember whether we took her by ambulance or whether we took her, but anyway we got there and they did whatever they did.” A rare, little understood condition, known as Reye’s Syndrome, was suspected in Barbara’s death, but never proven.

4) Timothy ~ Dec. 10, 1973

On Thanksgiving Day 1973, Tinning gave birth to a son, Timothy. On December 10, three weeks after his birth, Timothy was brought back to the same hospital. He was dead. Tinning told doctors she found him lifeless in his crib. Doctors found nothing medically wrong. His death was officially attributed to SIDS.

5) Nathan ~ Sep. 2, 1975

Two years later, on March 30, 1975 (Easter Sunday), Tinning gave birth to her fifth child, Nathan. On September 2, she showed up at St. Clare’s Hospital with the baby dead in her arms. She said she was driving in her car with the baby in the front seat when she noticed that he had stopped breathing. Again, there seemed to be no explanation for his death. His death was also attributed to SIDS.

6) Mary Frances~ Feb. 20, 1979

In 1978, the Tinnings made arrangements to adopt a child. The same year, Tinning became pregnant again. The Tinnings did not cancel the adoption and chose to keep both children. In August 1978, they received a baby boy, Michael, from the adoption agency. Two months later, on October 29, she gave birth to her sixth child, Mary Frances. In January 1979, Tinning rushed Mary Frances to the emergency room, directly across the street from her apartment, saying the baby had had a seizure. The staff were able to revive her. However, on February 20, Tinning came running into the same hospital with Mary Frances, who was brain dead. Once again, Tinning said she found the baby unconscious and did not know what had happened to her. Her death was also attributed to SIDS.

7) Jonathan~ Mar. 24, 1980

Once Mary Frances was buried, Tinning once again became pregnant. On November 19, she gave birth to her seventh child, Jonathan. In March 1980, she showed up at St. Clare’s hospital with Jonathan unconscious. Like Mary Frances, he was successfully revived. Due to the family’s history, Jonathan was sent to Boston Hospital where he was thoroughly examined. The doctors could find no valid medical reason why the baby simply stopped breathing. Jonathan was sent home. A few days later, Tinning returned to the hospital with Jonathan, and he was brain dead. Jonathan died on March 24, 1980.

8) Michael~ Mar. 2, 1981

Less than one year later, on the morning of March 2, 1981, Tinning showed up at her pediatrician’s office with Michael, her adopted child, then two and a half years old. He was wrapped in a blanket and unconscious. She told the doctor that she could not wake Michael and had no idea what was wrong. When the doctor examined Michael, he was already dead. Since Michael was adopted, the long-suspected theory that the deaths in the Tinning family had a genetic origin was discarded.

9) Tami Lynne~ Dec. 19, 1985

On August 22, 1985, Tinning gave birth to her eighth biological child, Tami Lynne. On December 19, next-door neighbor Cynthia Walter, who was also a practical nurse, went shopping with Tinning and later visited her home. Later that night, Walter received a frantic telephone call from Tinning. When Walter arrived, she found Tami Lynne lying on a changing table. Walter testified that the child was not moving and she could not feel any pulse or breathing. At the emergency room, the baby was pronounced dead.
